GEETA DUTT
Geeta Dutt, born as Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri on November 23, 1930, in Faridpur, Bengal Presidency, British India (now Bangladesh), was a renowned Indian playback singer and actress. She is considered one of the most influential and versatile voices of the Hindi film industry during the 1940s and 1950s. Geeta Dutt's soulful voice and emotional renditions made her a favorite among audiences and earned her a special place in the hearts of music lovers.
Geeta Dutt's musical journey began at a young age. She received formal training in classical music from different gurus and participated in various music competitions. Her talent caught the attention of music director Hanuman Prasad, who gave her the opportunity to sing for the film "Bhakta Prahlad" in 1946. Geeta Dutt's debut song, "Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya," became an instant hit, and she quickly gained recognition for her unique voice and style.
Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Geeta Dutt collaborated with several renowned music directors and worked on numerous successful films. Some of her most popular songs include "Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam" from "Kaagaz Ke Phool" (1959), "Aan Milo Aan Milo Shyam Sanware" from "Devdas" (1955), and "Babuji Dheere Chalna" from "Aar Paar" (1954). Her melodious and emotive voice could effortlessly express a wide range of emotions, from joy and love to sorrow and longing.
Apart from playback singing, Geeta Dutt also acted in a few films, including "Do Bhai" (1947) and "Bhakta Prahlad" (1946). However, her true prowess remained in her singing, and she focused primarily on her musical career.
In 1953, Geeta Dutt married filmmaker and music director Guru Dutt, and the couple collaborated on several successful projects. However, their personal lives faced challenges, including Guru Dutt's extramarital affairs and their eventual separation in 1957. Despite their separation, Geeta Dutt continued to work with Guru Dutt on films like "Pyaasa" (1957) and "Kaagaz Ke Phool" (1959), delivering some of her most memorable songs.
Tragically, Geeta Dutt's life was cut short at the age of 41. She passed away on July 20, 1972, due to cirrhosis of the liver. Her untimely demise left a void in the music industry, and she is remembered as one of the greatest playback singers in the history of Indian cinema.
